TAMBARAM KAILASAM, GAYATHRI. Efficient Skycube Computation using Bitmaps derived from Indexes. (Under the direction of Dr. Jaewoo Kang.) Skyline queries have been increasingly used in multi-criteria decision making and data mining applications. They retrieve a set of interesting points from a potentially large set of data points. A point is said to be interesting if it is as good or better in all dimensions and better in at least one dimension. Skyline Cube (Skycube) consists of skylines of all possible non-empty subsets of a given set of dimensions. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for computing skycube using bitmaps that are derivable from indexes. Point-based skycube algorithm is an improvement over the existing Bitmap algorithm, extended to compute skycube. Point-based algorithm processes one point at a time to check for skylines in all subspaces. Value-based skycube algorithm views points as value combinations and probes entire search space for potential skyline points. It significantly reduces bitmap access for low cardinality dimensions. Our experimental study shows that the two algorithms strictly dominate, or at least comparable to, the current skycube algorithm in most of the cases, suggesting that such an approach could be an useful addition to the set of skyline query processing techniques. QSkycube: Efficient Skycube Computation using Point-Based Space Partitioning

Skyline queries have gained considerable attention for multicriteria analysis of large-scale datasets. However, the skyline queries are known to return too many results for highdimensional data. To address this problem, a skycube is introduced to efficiently provide users with multiple skylines with different strengths. For efficient skycube construction, state-of-the-art algorithms amortized r...

Fast Set Intersection through Run-Time Bitmap Construction over PForDelta-Compressed Indexes

Set intersection is a fundamental operation for evaluating conjunctive queries in the context of scientific data analysis. The state-of-the-art approach in performing set intersection, compressed bitmap indexing, achieves high computational efficiency because of cheap bitwise operations; however, overall efficiency is often nullified by the HPC I/O bottleneck, because compressed bitmap indexes ...

Computing Closed Skycubes

In this paper, we tackle the problem of efficient skycube computation. We introduce a novel approach significantly reducing domination tests for a given subspace and the number of subspaces searched. Technically, we identify two types of skyline points that can be directly derived without using any domination tests. Moreover, based on formal concept analysis, we introduce two closure operators ...

A127 Query Optimization for Selections Using Bitmaps

Bitmaps are popular indexes for Data Warehouse (DW) applications and most database management systems (DBMSs) ooer them today. This paper analyzes query optimization issues for selection operations using bitmaps. Both continuous and discrete selection criteria are considered. Query optimization is categorized into static and dynamic optimization. The static optimization issues discussed are the...

Threshold and Symmetric Functions over Bitmaps

Bitmap indexes are routinely used to speed up simple aggregate queries in databases. Set operations such as intersections, unions and complements can be represented as logical operations (and, or, not). However, less is known about the application of bitmap indexes to more advanced queries. We want to extend the applicability of bitmap indexes. As a starting point, we consider symmetric Boolean...
